About The Provider

Erin Schumer, MD, MPH is a board-certified cardiothoracic surgeon with advanced fellowship training in complex cardiac surgery, heart transplantation, and mechanical circulatory support.

Dr. Schumer is a graduate of The Ohio State University College of Medicine in Columbus, OH. She completed her residency in General Surgery at the University of Louisville in Louisville, KY. She further specialized by completing a fellowship in Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN and went on to complete a highly specialized fellowship in Heart Transplantation and Mechanical Circulatory Support at Washington University. She is board certified in General Surgery by the American Board of Surgery and Cardiothoracic Surgery by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.

Dr. Schumer's special clinical interests encompass Adult Cardiac Surgery, Heart and Lung Failure, and Mechanical Circulatory Support. She treats a broad spectrum of conditions, including:

  • Coronary artery disease
  • Valvular disease
  • Aortic aneurysm and dissection
  • Arrhythmia
  • Cardiogenic shock and respiratory failure
  • Advanced heart failure

Her surgical treatments and procedures include:

  • Coronary artery bypass surgery
  • Aortic, mitral, tricuspid, and pulmonary valve repair/replacement
  • Surgical ablation for arrhythmia
  • Aorta replacement
  • Advanced support modalities such as Impella 5.5 and ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation)

Dr. Schumer approaches each patient with a commitment to providing individualized care and the safest, most effective treatment options available. She strongly believes that heart surgery is a team effort and that exceptional outcomes are achieved by working seamlessly as a cohesive, multidisciplinary team.

Her inspiration to become a cardiothoracic surgeon stems from a personal connection: her father received a lung transplant. Dr. Schumer is drawn to the acuity and technical demands of heart surgery, as well as the gratifying nature of the patient population she serves.

Outside of the hospital, Dr. Schumer enjoys spending time with her husband and three daughters. For recreation, she is an avid rock climber and hiker.
