Salma Akram, MD is a board‑certified gastroenterologist with extensive experience in the evaluation and treatment of complex digestive disorders. She earned her medical degree from Rawalpindi Medical College in Pakistan and completed her internal medicine residency at Harbor Hospital Center, University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore, MD. She subsequently pursued advanced fellowship training in gastroenterology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. Dr. Akram also holds a Master in Epidemiology from London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, University of London, UK.
Dr. Akram specializes in the diagnosis and management of a broad range of gastrointestinal conditions, with particular interests in inflammatory bowel disease, gastrointestinal luminal cancers, motility disorders, and advanced endoscopic procedures. She provides comprehensive care for patients with conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease, dysphagia, eosinophilic esophagitis, peptic ulcer disease, celiac disease, irritable bowel syndrome, liver enzyme abnormalities, pancreatitis, and colorectal cancer screening and prevention. Her procedural expertise includes upper endoscopy (EGD), colonoscopy, polypectomy, gastrointestinal stricture dilation, hemorrhoid and variceal banding, and percutaneous gastrostomy tube placement.
Committed to compassionate, evidence‑based care, Dr. Akram believes in building strong, collaborative relationships with her patients. She prioritizes listening, patient education, and shared decision‑making, empowering individuals to take an active role in their health. She works closely with each patient to develop individualized treatment plans focused on improving both clinical outcomes and quality of life.
In addition to her clinical practice, Dr. Akram serves as a Clinical Associate Professor of Internal Medicine at Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine and has authored numerous peer‑reviewed publications. She is an active member of the American College of Gastroenterology and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. Outside of medicine, she enjoys hiking, gardening, nature photography, and listening to podcasts.
