He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Cincinnati and went on to complete fellowships in both Adult Cardiology and Advanced Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplantation at the University of Cincinnati.

Dr. O'Brien is board certified in Adult Cardiology and Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology by the American Board of Internal Medicine, and in Echocardiography by the National Board of Echocardiography.

His clinical interests include heart failure, cardiomyopathy, mechanical circulatory support, cardiac transplantation, and cardiac critical care. He provides care for patients with heart failure, cardiomyopathy, coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease, arrhythmias, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and other general and preventive cardiology conditions. Diagnostic and treatment services may include electrocardiograms (ECGs), transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiograms, Holter and event monitoring, remote cardiac monitoring, and cardioversion.

Dr. O'Brien's philosophy of care is centered on the belief that every patient deserves to be heard, understood, and treated as an individual. He emphasizes building meaningful relationships with patients, taking time to understand their symptoms, concerns, and personal health goals. Through thoughtful evaluation and open communication, he helps patients better understand their cardiovascular health and empowers them to make informed decisions. He believes the best outcomes result from a collaborative partnership between physician and patient, creating personalized treatment plans that reflect each individual's needs and priorities.

Inspired by the dynamic nature of cardiovascular physiology, Dr. O'Brien was drawn to cardiology by the complexity and elegance of the heart and circulatory system. He values the diverse challenges of the specialty, from managing life-threatening cardiac emergencies to helping patients successfully navigate chronic cardiovascular conditions. He also enjoys applying emerging scientific advances and interpreting complex cardiac imaging and diagnostic studies to improve patient outcomes.

For Dr. O'Brien, one of the most rewarding aspects of cardiology is the opportunity to help prevent disease, restore health, extend lives, and improve quality of life for patients and their families. He views cardiology as a unique blend of science, critical thinking, and human connection that allows him to make a meaningful difference in people's lives.

Dr. O'Brien is currently pursuing a faculty appointment with the Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine. His professional accomplishments include recognition as a Cincinnati Top Doctors and Cincy Top Docs physician, as well as serving as President and Service Line Medical Director of The Christ Hospital Heart & Vascular Institute and Chief of Staff at West Chester Hospital.

He is a member of the American College of Cardiology, Heart Failure Society of America, International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation, and the American Association for Physician Leadership. Readers can explore his published research through his PubMed publications.
